The Benefits of Aerating Your Lawn

While consistent watering and fertilization are important for sustaining a healthy lawn, grass also needs plenty of air pockets in order to breathe and absorb water and nutrients. Over time, regular traffic, play, and sports activities can cause soil compaction, limiting the amount of water, air, and nutrients that reach the grass roots. In the core aeration process, our machine removes soil cores to reduce compaction so that oxygen, water, and fertilizer can more easily penetrate the soil.

The Best Times to Aerate

It’s ideal to aerate lawns every fall or spring when there is enough moisture in the soil to pull cores. We also understand that not all lawns  are the same. For some yards, it may be beneficial to plant additional grass seed on your existing lawn after the aeration process — if it shows signs of deterioration or if your grass is a variety that is more susceptible to disease, insects, or drought. Seeding and aerating together allows the newly sown seeds to take advantage of the open pockets in the soil.

Lawn Aeration

Aerating improves your lawn’s ability to grow thick and healthy in the following four ways:

Earthworms and other microorganisms that decompose thatch have more room to live

Root systems can grow deeper, enhancing their tolerance to cold winters and summer droughts.

Fertilizer and oxygen can infiltrate the soil and circulate to the grass roots.

Opening up the soil keeps rainwater from running off, allowing for better drainage and increasing your lawn’s water-holding capacity.
